Genessa cannot be picked up like other shells

Genessa the Wayward is the sister/abbess-style shell of Mortal Shell II, and unlike shells that are found on a body out in the world, she is tied to a quest line. You will not stumble over her while exploring — the shell only unlocks after you recover a key item, hand it in, and finish the follow-up conversation. Her signature ability is Faithful Doubles: Genessa summons a doubles duplicate that performs one weapon attack with your equipped weapon and then vanishes, which effectively repeats your light attacks for extra damage. When her health is depleted she also has a Duality passive, becoming Stray rather than being severed from the Harbinger.

What you need before starting

  • Access to the Ruins of Mammon region.
  • The Abbey Entrance beacon in the Ruins of Mammon activated, so you can warp there quickly.
  • Enough combat strength to defeat the boss Sester Secundus.

Step-by-step unlock route

  1. Warp to the Abbey Entrance beacon in the Ruins of Mammon and set out from there on foot.
  2. Run to the Revenant Graves area in front of the abbey, on the approach that leads toward the Sester's Gate. Look for the glowing red Sester's Censer at the statue.
  3. Interact with the red censer to trigger the boss fight against Sester Secundus. She shoots from range, uses an unparryable dash to close the gap, and repositions behind you — stay mobile and punish the dash recovery.
  4. Defeat Sester Secundus, then pick up the Sester's Censer from the arena.
  5. Return to Marrow Keep and find Sester Genessa.
  6. Hand over the censer and complete the follow-up dialogue. The Genessa shell unlocks once the conversation ends.

Verification note: this route was cross-checked against community wiki documentation of the same quest line. Boss names and item names follow the in-game English text.

Is Genessa worth the detour?

Faithful Doubles scales with whatever weapon you have equipped, so the shell fits builds that want every combo to hit twice — particularly ranged or hit-and-run playstyles where the free duplicate damage comes without extra risk.

Planning a full collection run? The all-region beacon route covers the Ruins of Mammon beacons you will pass on the way to the Revenant Graves.
