How beacons, Ova, and Mether's Breath work together
Mortal Shell II's world is split into four large blocks: the Disciple's Pass prologue, Fainweald, the Ruins of Mammon, and the endgame underground region called The Unfound Path. Everything after the prologue contains Corrupted Gates — doorways into self-contained sub-areas where the world map is not displayed.
The collection loop works like this:
- Cleanse beacons as you explore. Each cleansing grants Ova, and beacons double as fast-travel points.
- Collect enough Ova and the Gloom Siphon in Marrow Keep grants you Mether's Breath.
- Use Mether's Breath to dissolve corruption walls, which unlocks the remaining beacons and opens the Corrupted Gates.
Order matters: follow the region order below, which matches a normal first playthrough. Attempting the gated sub-areas before you have Mether's Breath only leads to locked paths.
Skip ahead: Fainweald route · Ruins of Mammon route · The Unfound Path
Disciple's Pass (prologue)
The prologue holds two beacons, and the recommended route is simple: cleanse the Disciple's Grotto beacon first, then Village Outskirts.
Skipped the prologue? Circle back before the endgame. The Disciple's Grotto beacon still needs cleansing for your region total, and it is the one most players miss.
Fainweald: beacons and map fragments
Fainweald follows the northern half of the world map and rewards you with five map fragments. The recommended cleansing order:
- Widow's Overlook (pick up Map of Fainweald 4 on this route) → Mushroom Village Gate
- Blackridge Pass (Map of Fainweald 3) → Gloomshade Grove → Stonebled Gate
- Glutted Mire (behind a Corrupted Gate): Seeping Mire → Sunken Village → Magdalena's Glade
- One Legged Wolf (Map of Fainweald 5) → Citadel of Penance (Map of Fainweald 2) → Outskirts of Nochte (Map of Fainweald 1)
- After beating Magdalena, the Lady of the Woods in the Glutted Mire you earn Mether's Breath, which unlocks the last two Corrupted Gates: the Prisoner's Domain (four beacons) and the Sanguine Caverns (three beacons).
The turn-by-turn routes for every beacon and the exact pickup spots for all five fragments are in the dedicated Fainweald beacon guide.
Ruins of Mammon: beacons and map fragments
The Ruins of Mammon contain six map fragments and three Corrupted Gates. Recommended order:
- Outskirts of Mammon (Map of Mammon 5) → Abandoned Outpost
- Gate of Mammon (Maps of Mammon 4 and 6) → Castigator's Keep (Maps of Mammon 3 and 2)
- Gate of Infinity → Abbey Entrance (Map of Mammon 1) → Sester's Gate → The Silent Steps
- Then clear the remaining stops: Withered Shoals → Faded Citadel → Conquered Temple.
The efficient strategy is to sweep all six map fragments and the outer beacons first, then work through the three Corrupted Gates one by one — the beacon inside each gate only unlocks after its boss falls. This region is also where the Genessa the Wayward shell quest takes place, at the Revenant Graves near the abbey.
The Unfound Path: endgame
The Unfound Path is the endgame underground region, and it has no map display at all. The downward passage opens at the siphon in Marrow Keep once your Fainweald and Ruins of Mammon cleansing is nearly complete and you have gathered enough Ova.
Inside, the route is linear with three branch-cutting detours:
- Chamber of the Forsaken → Receiving Hall → Faithful's Shelter (cut the first branch)
- Bridge of Procession → Empty Cradle (cut the second branch)
- Brether's Court → Obsidian Vault (cut the third branch)
- Finish at The Hidden Nave, where the final beacon opens the road to the last boss.
Cutting each of the red giant's three branches is what unlocks the final beacons, so take the detours in order rather than rushing the nave.
Collection checklist
- Disciple's Pass: 2 beacons, no map fragments.
- Fainweald: full route in the Fainweald beacon guide, 5 map fragments.
- Ruins of Mammon: 6 map fragments, three boss-gated Corrupted Gates.
- The Unfound Path: no map, three branch cuts before the final beacon.
